A LIFE IN PANTO by Eve Roberts age 6

Chapter 1 – The Audition

One day I went for an audition. I wanted to be a babe in Aladdin. For the audition I had to make up a dance and then we lined up in height order. Tallest at the back down to smallest at the front. We then all had to make sad, cold, hot, happy and frightened faces.

Chapter 2- Waiting for news

After the Audition I had to wait one week. During that week I felt very nervous waiting to hear if I had got in. I went to my ballet class and on the door my name was on the list. I jumped with excitement and shouted Yes Yes Yes.

Chapter 3- Rehersals

The rehersals went on for two weeks. The first day I was excited. There was a lady dancer called Vicky who was my panto mum and looked after me. The dances were tricky to learn but I got used to them . Trying on the costumes was great fun. We did 2 days of technical run through which was very, very slow. We were given notes and had to remember every little change. On the last day of rehersals, some newspaper men came to watch and took lots of photos. In the Babe’s dressing room we had to share a long dressing table and look after our own costumes and makeup. We were on the top floor of the theatre, it was very tiring to get up the stairs because there were 75 steps.

Chapter 4 – On stage

At last the opening night came. While we got ready, we could hear the noise in the theatre getting louder. We got a half hour call and then a 5 minute call and then a beginners call. At beginners call we took our positions in the wings at the side of the stage. I was on stage left with 3 other babes. As the actors and dancers arrived they wished us good luck, “break a leg” they said. The lights went out, the curtain went up and the show started. When I heard my music I knew it was time to go on stage. The first time I ran on stage I thought I was going to faint. When I felt nervous I pretended that only one person was watching and it was OK.

I smiled and smiled until my cheeks ached. I danced and danced until my legs hurt. I got used to all the costume changes. Some of the changes were very quick. To make it quicker we lined up and fastened each others buttons. It was called teamwork.

Once my skirt fell off when I was on stage. I felt embarrassed but I had a purple leotard underneath and knew that I should just carry on with the show! Everyone thought it was very funny but I didn’t. Widow Twanky said “well done, handled like a professional”.

Chapter 5 – Team work in the dressing room

In our dressing room we had our own makeup but we always shared and helped each other to put our makeup on neatly and do our hair. We had some dressing room rules. We had to hang up our costumes neatly and look after then for our understudy in the other group. When someone was upset or did something wrong on stage, we all gave her a hug and made her feel better. We did not take things from other peoples drawers or say that we were better than the other group.

Chapter 6 – The Babe’s party

At the end of panto we had a Babe’s party in the dressing room. We invited all the cast and crew and had lots of food. The dancers ate the most because they were so hungry. We took photos and got autographs. It was a tradition. When we left the theatre there was a big surprise, a pink limo for the babe’s to ride round town in.
The last night was very sad because I had to leave all my new friends, the cast and the backstage crew.

Chapter 7 – Feelings and Memories

When I think of my panto feelings they are exciting, nervous, tired, proud and very happy.
My biggest lesson was from Grant (Abanazar), who told us to remember that every night is the first night for the audience even though we have had many nights. We must remember to always perform as if it is the first night.
My best memories are of Vicky my panto mum, the cast who were very kind and funny and being one of the babe team. We had soooo much fun!
