“You go in sad and come out happy”
a quote from Academy pupil Jamie aged 9 years.
On returning home from dancing, acting and teaching overseas Julie Mitchell set up the Edinburgh Dance Academy. The Academy now has studios throughout Edinburgh and East Lothian. Alongside regular classes in ballet, modern, jazz, tap and hip hop the Academy also has its own Company – “Edinburgh Dance Company”.
Julie Mitchell is an examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance and travels the world
lecturing and examining children and teachers alike.
Pupils at the Academy have the opportunity to take ballet, modern and tap examinations and, since it’s opening, the Academy has prided itself on the high standard of results. There is also a non-exam route for children who prefer less structured dance. Singing and drama are also taught in the Performance Group classes. Former pupils have gone on to dance with the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Portuguese National Ballet and various other classical and modern companies throughout the world. EDA has its own “Chance to Dance Scholarship Fund” which helps young dancers in many ways.
Julie has also been a steadfast supporter of pupils who have chosen to pursue a career in teaching. Several, with her encouragement, tuition and support, now have their own dance schools in Edinburgh and beyond and continue to seek her advice.
Edinburgh Dance Academy firmly believes that self expression is a wonderful way for children to improve their social skills and build their confidence. The world of dance is an exciting place to be – a place where children can forget any worries. They go into the studio for an hour and they can let themselves go – they can be a wave on a beach or a tiger in the jungle – they can be what they are – children!
